Vintage original 8 x 10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the 1920's western drama, DON QUICKSHOT OF THE RIO GRANDE, released in 1923 by Universal Pictures and directed by George Marshall.
Don Quickshot of the Rio Grande was Jack Hoxie's first production for Universal. The image features a bizarre interior shot inside of a barn and depicts five cowboys wearing costumes and masks as they all lie askew on the hay-filled ground after, presumably, a fight scene. It is in very fine- condition.

*"The 31 Mar 1923 Moving Picture World announced the recent purchase by Universal Pictures of screen rights for Stephen Chalmers’s 1921 short story, “Don Quickshot of the Rio Grande,” intended as a vehicle for cowboy star Hoot Gibson. The sale was arranged through the firm of Brandt & Kirkpatrick. On 2 Jun 1923, Motion Picture News reported that Universal had reassigned the title role to Jack Hoxie, marking his first production for the company.
Don Quickshot of the Rio Grande was released on 4 Jun 1923, followed by a New York City opening eleven days later at Loew’s New York Theatre. Although critics for the 3 Jun 1923 Film Daily and the 9 Jun 1923 Motion Picture News found the film to be highly entertaining, neither was sure if its humorous content was accidental or intentional.
"Pep" Pepper, a romantic cowboy whose faculty for dreaming costs him his job, tries to emulate the fictional character, “Don Quixote,” after reading the Spanish classic. When he intervenes in a saloon quarrel, the proprietor is killed and Pep is blamed. He escapes by leaping from a window to his horse. While evading the authorities, Pep meets and falls in love with Tulip Hellier, the daughter of a wealthy cattleman. He rescues Tulip from a gang of bandits and exonerates himself from the murder charge."
